My process is wanting to take me off clonazapam. By 25% every 4 months or so than another 25% ect. I was taken off of lorazapam about 5 yrs ago. I started having 4-5hour panic attacks. My heart rate, sweating, not being able to take a full breathe etc. It would start to ease and then my heart rate would go back up again etc over and over. I can't go through that again.

Have any of you successfully come off benzo? And any tips too. Thanks in advance.

It sounds to me like you need them, so why are you coming off of them? Do you take more than you're supposed to (abusing them)? If so, that's a good reason to come off of them, and take something that's necessary for your panic attacks that's not as addictive. Best wishes.

I'm sorry to hear that. It sucks for people who really need them. It's like that in my area too. The doctors want to start taking people off of these things and they don't even warn you. I think it's proper if you're weaned off instead of cold turkey method. Some drugs are dangerous to just come off of without a wean process. I think the reason being is these drugs are so widely abused. It's happening in my country everyday. I hope you feel better and hope you find something that will work similar.

You can ask your doctor too once you start weaning if maybe he'd prescribe a non-benzo to help? Nothing works as well as a benzo, but prn Seroquel (a small dose, 25 mg for some people, less for others) can help (at least it does for me). And there are some other meds that can help a little with anxiey such as buspirone, propranolol. I'm on all 3 but no longer clonazepam...and since there are positives to being off the benzos, I remind myself of that. I'm less forgetful, am able to read books again, don't lose common words while speaking to people. I have actually pretty much completely stopped losing words in conversation with others, actually, now that I think of it And I don't have pharmacy hassles like I did with clonazepam.

Every time I have bad anxiety I remind myself to just breathe, breathe, breathe. If I'm home and have the time, I make a cup of chamomile tea. When I have panic attacks (which yes, I definitely still do), I remind myself again and again that it's only a panic attack, I'm not dying. Just keep breathing through it, try to think of something else, like my drawing, try singing, play music. And I haven't had one of those bad days of hours and hours of high anxiety, panic attack, high anxiety, panic attacks, etc. for 3 or 4 hours straight for maybe half a year now (knock on wood). Even though I occasionally still get those awful panic cycles, they are much, much less common than they were even when I WAS on benzos!

Another thing that has helped me is exercise. I usually walk or do pilates 6-7 days a week.

I wonder does the hydroxyzine also help with panic attacks, @Blueberrybook? I'm glad the breathing and exercise help you!

I think the hydroxyzine helps a little. I actually take it at night to help me sleep, but my pdoc has said I can take it prn for panic attacks. However, the Seroquel prn works much better for me than hydroxyzine so that's what I usually use. I am also on a much higher dosage of Seroquel (300 mg) at night for bipolar.
