Is there anything that works for seasonal allergies other than Claritin and Benadryl? Claritin makes my anxiety go through the roof. And while Benadryl doesn't put me to sleep, it makes me drowsy during the day (which is when I'm most bothered by allergies). I am on hydroxyzine for anxiety but I think it does zilch for my allergies. Is there any happy medium out there? Any natural remedies or anything?

There's zyrtec but it's related to hydroxyzine and in my experience the combination was sedating. My niece was told to take Zyzill (I think that's the spelling) for a food allergy if she ingests the food. I've never tried it. There's Flonase which is a nasal spray and another nasal spray, maybe 2. My therapist likes Allegra; he has severe seasonal allergies.

I am fortunate that claritin works for me.

What symptoms are you trying to get rid of?

I find that Flonase works great for my nasal congestion. I'm also aware of certain foods that cause congestion, such as dairy products, mushrooms, tartar sauce, yeast extract and moldy cheese. That's just me.

Foods that contain quercetin might help suppress histamine, or you could take a supplement.

The worst symptom I have is itchy eyes, an itchy nose (though usually not sneezing). I don't have a lot of congestion. It's the itchy eyes that bother me the most. That, and the overall fatigue the allergies cause me.

Added an antihistamine eye drops to my curbside grocery pickup order tomorrow. Maybe that could help?

@Blueberrybook, it’s the fatigue that hits me hard when it kicks in. I’m not keen on taking anti-histamines, as the side effects can be unpleasant. However, I’m also prone to cellulitis from insect bites, so I do wind up taking anti-histamines to help combat that, which in turn eases the pollen allergy.

The eye-drops sound worth trying. It’ll be interesting to see how you get on with them.

I tend to find some years are worse than others. I’ve never pinned down the particular type of pollen that I find the worst.

I think the allergy eye drops are helping my eyes a bit; the left one better than the right, but just a week ago, I had a scratch that had been healing on my right cornea, and I'm sure this pollen is not helping it a bit (I had antibiotic eye drops from the urgent care to use for the eye through Saturday.) I need to read the instructions on the antihistamine eye drops, see how often I can use them in a day. I have used them twice today. If only they wouldn't print OTC medication instructions microscopically! Hopefully, I can have another go round with them yet today.

At least today, my fatigue is not as bad as it had been all last week, and I hope that lasts because that was miserable!

It figures; wildflowers are starting to bloom; it feels and looks nice outside and boom! Allergies! I can't pinpoint my particular allergy either except down to seasonal (especially spring) beyond grass pollen & ragweed.

I tried generic Allegra today for runny nose and scratchy throat. (Crazy to have allergies when it’s snowing but New England I guess). It worked but I would go extra strength next time, supposedly was “24 hours” but here I am 7 hours later and getting reactive to plant sperm all over again. No drowsiness or anything which is neat.

I might give Allegra a try. I already had to go buy generic Mucinex D because of the sinus gunk getting into my ear passages. The one ear nearly has an earache
