This whole thing started beginning of Nov last year, trying to balance out aquarium water that filled with nitrite that ended up killing my awesome big goldfish (Ghost) I had adopted in March of 2020. Had him on my kitchen sink & he was my kitchen buddy. When I lost him I cried so hard as I was trying to get his water fixed. Turns out with research I realized he must have gone through nitrite poisoning because his previous owner thought he had died when she had him & that he lost all his goldfish color. In my research, that is what nitrite poisoning will do & it said the 2nd time it happens is usually fatal. This started my learnibg process about aquarium water chemistry.
Lost Ghost first week of November. I just let the filter run & added a few water balancing chemicals. Took water sample in to Feeder Supply & we started working on it & I decided to get a new fish, new aquarium & try to get the water balanced before bringing my new fish home. They suggested not starting completely over with the water & working with adding 75% new, then 50% new & that all started around Thanksgiving last year. Took my sample of water in this week & it is so close that they think one more week for all the cycle to be complete to have safe water for my new fish. I picked out this pretty fish that looks like iron pyrate....brownish with gold flecks all over his body. He came up to the glass to look at me through the tank. Go figure, he has only one eye on the left side. The pet store said they had no idea what might have caused that, but I fell in love with him & he is friendly......so he has been marked "sold" since just before Thanksgiving. My brain was working on a name & since he looks like iron pyrite & he has one eye like a pirate, I decided his name is Pirate or Py. The balance in the water was so close this last week but we want it to be perfect so there is no chance that some chemical in the water will make him sick. They think the cycle will be finished this next week since it is so close & my new fish buddy can come to his new home. I never realized what a process it is to balance out aquarium water....learned a lot in the process but will be a lot more careful with water & filtering. I sure have missed having Ghost keep me company while cooking & doing dishes & I spend a lot of time in my kitchen. Looking forward to welcoming my new fish Py to his new home

Oooh, his color sounds pretty.
Getting the water just right sounds like a challenge. Did they say why to not just drain the tank and start over? |

We probably should have done that but they thought the good bacteria was a good thing to keep & didn't think it would take this long to cycle through the water clearing. When I bought the new aquarium I only kept 25% of the water & have made several 50% changes along with the chemicals. Even tested my tap water to make sure the problem wasn't coming from there. The fish experts at the feed store were surprised it has taken this long to balance the water & added a heater to the tank a few weeks ago cause the water was too cold for the good bacteria to grow. That was what really helped. Will turn the heat down when Py comes home. Set it to 77 & we finally have made progress

Finally last wednesday (end of March) I got my fish water balanced & ended up bringing 2 fish home. The one I picked out tgat I named Pirate never made it out of the pet store. He died several weeks before my aquarium water was balanced.
So now I have a bright gold fan tail I named Bullion & one (the same color as Pirate) that I named Cocoa Puff. They are best buds now & really enjoying their new home & I am enjoying having the peaceful feeling of having fish just swimming gracefully around to watch while in my kitchen. Yea, I talk to them & Cote dawg gets excited thinking I am talking to him so he puts his paws on the counter & watches too. They actually come up to my finger when I put their fish food in the water. I was definitely missing having Ghost (goldfish) cause I am enjoying these guys so much. Now if their aquarium will stay balanced & I can keep it clean without bacteria bloom, all will be good
